The Big Island of Hawaii: Top Experiences

We love Hawaii! If you are looking for diverse experiences and jaw dropping landscapes, look no further than the Big Island. Even the sand colors are distinct; ranging from coal black, to olive green, to powdery white. We spent 10 days crisscrossing the island and we barely scratched the surface! This is truly a place you can go back to year after year, and have new experiences every time. Where else can you see snow (on Mt. Mauna Kea)  and lava on the same day? Touring Hawaii is one of the most adventurous trips we have taken as a family, so it holds a special place in our hearts. Volcanoes National Park is reason alone to visit. It is one of America’s greatest treasures and you have to see it for yourself to appreciate it.  Hawaii will show her love to you by displaying the most intensely colored rainbows you have ever seen. The kids were thrilled to wander through lava tubes, snorkel, observe sea turtles, check out waterfalls, feel the heat of the steam vents, hike fields of lava, swim with the manta rays, play with octopus and eat fresh papaya every day. Being home school minded parents, we loved the Pu’uhonua O Honaunau Historical Park. I had to see Green Sand Beach for myself. Husband and I made sure to stop at a coffee farm for free samples! Speaking of free, don’t miss the awesome cultural show at Mauna Lani.

There is so much to do and see on the Big Island, that I can hardly wait to go back!  Are you a foodie like we are? Check out Big Island Bites for tips on where to dine and taste the best of the island.

Big Island Wishlist

What’s left on my Wish List for next time?  I always have a lofty wish list when planning any trip! There is just never enough time or money to do them all. I thoroughly research all my wish list experiences and make sure they have been vetted by great reviews.  If you’ve experienced any of my wish list, please leave a comment and let me know what you thought!

Flumin’ the Kohala Ditch

I’m not sure that “flumin'” is an actual word, but Hawaiians have made up all kinds of fun terms that perfectly fit! Kohala is a verdent mountainous region of the big island that was home to many sugarcane plantations. The ditch was built centuries ago to irrigate the plantations and bring life to the region. What a marvel of engineering and ingenuity! The tour includes a 4wd ride, a short hike and kayak rides in the flume! It’s great for all levels and ages.

Umauma Experience

Who wants to zip line over waterfalls? We do! The Umauama Experience has many options to take you on a wonderful water filled adventure. They even have giant swing that propels you over the falls!  Eek! This is huge on our wishlist! For the less adventurous travelers in your group, there is a beautiful garden tour they can take where they will still be able to take in gorgeous views of the property.

Evening at Kahua Ranch

Cowboys aren’t just living in the midwest! Kahua Ranch was established in 1928. Its history is rich in legend and goes all the way back to the days of King Kamehameha. This is such a great experience for the whole family. Their chicken/steak dinner is complete with campfires, smores, line dancing and stargazing. All the wonderful traditional experiences of a ranch, IN PARADISE!
